After my incredible visit to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and a delicious crispy chicken sandwich at nearby City Diner, I decided to make one more stop in Kansas City, MO before heading back to my hotel across the Missouri River in Kansas City, KS.
From the photos on Google Maps, it looked like a small, commemorative garden of some sort located at the corner of Brooklyn Ave. and E 22nd Street. A memorial commemorating the former site of Municipal Stadium, once home to many, many Kansas City professional teams and a host of Kansas City sports legends. I found a spot next to the memorial, parked, and hustled over to take a few photos of the garden.
There were a number of profiles featured, included one of my favorite baseball players – Satchel Paige.
And this descriptive plaque showcasing how much Municipal Stadium impacted the Kansas City sports scene. From the plaque, here is a list of teams that called Municipal Stadium home – Blues, Monarchs, A’s, Royals, Chiefs. Quite an impressive list, to say the least. Short list of highlights that Municipal Stadium can lay claim to – 1964 Beatles concert, 1924 Kansas City Monarchs won Negro Leagues World Series, as well as Hall of Fame players Hank Aaron, Mickey Mantle, and Jackie Robinson all played at Municipal, and so many more important sports and cultural events.
It was a quick and successful trip to the former site of Municipal Stadium, which now has a commemorative garden at the corner of Brooklyn Avenue and E 22nd Street. It was a really cool site to check out and walk off my lunch and get some Kansas City sports knowledge. If you are heading over there to check out this memorial site, I would suggest finding a parking spot on Brooklyn Avenue to give yourself a little more time to walk the garden and read the plaques. Overall, it was another incredible Kansas City (MO) baseball experience checking out the former site of Municipal Stadium, Kansas City, MO, USA.
