This past week, I was in Dayton, Ohio for a week of training (ArcBest) and had some personal time for…you guessed it – baseball experiences. Prior to arriving in Dayton, I knew about the Dayton Dragons and the Dayton University Flyers and that was pretty much it. I was pleasantly surprised to find many more Dayton baseball stories, stadiums, and experiences to learn more about. And I started my Dayton day of baseball at Day Air Credit Union Ballpark, home of the Dayton Dragons.
So the week of July 13th through the 17th (2026) is the annual All-Star break for both the Major League level clubs and their minor league affiliates. So, Tuesday was no exception for the Cincinnati Reds Single-A Affiliate Dayton Dragons, open only for ticket sales and other stadium activities. There was a field day event happening on the field as I arrived to the front gate entrance and to locked gates. No worries, I took the time to walk the perimeter of the outside of Day Air Ballpark once I found street parking.
By the way, did you catch the names of the two Dayton Dragons from the photos above? Heater and Gem. Gem, you ask? Well, Dayton, Ohio is nicknamed “Gem City.” Dayton was nicknamed Gem City, according to the internet which is always correct, because it “referred to the city’s status as a glittering gem of industry, innovation, and wealthy cultural institutions.” And I found out just exactly why in a walk down the Dayton Walk of Fame, which I will write about later this week.
The perimeter walk of Day Air Credit Union Ballpark took me around 80% of the stadium. I got some great shots of the field from a side street that ran just passed the outfield fences. Across from the field was a huge apartment complex or condo and tons of restaurants. You could see the field of play clear as “Day” from this vantage point.
With no pro shop appearing to be open, plus the field day camp on the field, I didn’t want to push my luck trying to get into Day Air Ballpark for any closer views. I was really happy with the perimeter photos of the field, the scoreboard, and the surrounding Dayton Dragons signage. Honestly, I probably would have had better luck if the Dragons were in town playing this week. But, I did get some fantastic photos of what appears to be an awesome Dayton Baseball experience.
