The MILB Docuseries “Grass Routes” hosted by longtime MLB writer Jonathan Mayo is so fun to watch. If you haven’t seen any of the episodes, head over to http://www.milb.com and in the search bar type “Grass Routes.” Mayo and his team travel to several minor league communities to find out what makes Portland tick, what makes Asheville so cool, what makes Montgomery so special, and so on. Recently, on a layover in Charlotte, I watched the Rochester edition of “Grass Routes,” featuring the City of Rochester, NY and the AAA Rochester Red Wings organization. Here is a sneak peak at what you can expect via the trailer – Grass Routes – Rochester.
The food, the small business community support, the stadium, the ownership group, the loyal fanbase, the team on the field – the Rochester Red Wing experience is one of the best in all of minor league baseball. Rochester is now the AAA affiliate of the Washington Nationals. For most of my baseball life, the Red Wings were the affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. In fact, it was the Red Wings who were the Pawtucket Red Sox opponent in professional baseball’s longest game that spanned over 3 days sometime back in the 1980s. Rochester has one of the most storied baseball histories in all over professional baseball, heck all of professional sports. This docuseries episode dives into just some of that history and introduces us (the fans) to players, coaches, management, some interesting food choices, and some cool fans from Rochester. Highly recommended to baseball fans of all ages.
