Last week, I was in a familiar spot of the country, New England, for work (ArcBest). Typically on a work or vacation to an unfamiliar part of the United States, I pull up Google Maps and search for cool and interesting baseball experience. Having grown up in New England, Google Maps would not be necessary for such an exercise. I was also working in an area I am very familiar with (Brockton) and so I had a few baseball places already picked out as my work week unfolded. And one in particular that was just about 5 miles from the service center I was working at – Lou Gorman Field at Stonehill College, Easton, MA.

I arrived at the entrance to Stonehill College Wednesday afternoon just prior to my work commitment. The front gate security officer, after hearing why I wanted to enter the campus of Stonehill, directed me to Campus Police, which gave me an opportunity to drive partially through the campus. Stonehill College is very similar to a lot of traditional New England colleges and universities in terms of grounds, buildings, stone walls, and overall landscape of the campus. I found the Campus Police building, introduced myself to a security officer and a Campus Policeman, and was granted admission to carry out my baseball task – photographing and documenting my visit to Lou Gorman Field. I liked that they checked me out, I liked that they cared to make sure I was legit, it should make every parent of Stonehill College feel better knowing that Campus Police did its job – to keep the students, faculty safe on campus.

Before I get to the photos and observations of Lou Gorman Field, I wanted to mention that Officer Sean Gannon had a wonderful tribute in the Campus Police office there at Stonehill College. Officer Gannon was fatally shot serving a warrant during his time with the Yarmouth Police Department, along with his partner, Nero, who was shot and wounded during the same incident. Officer Gannon was a K-9 officer and a Campus Police Officer at Stonehill College before transferring to the Yarmouth (Cape Cod, MA) Police Department. He was posthumously promoted to Sergeant in April of 2018. This was a huge story in New England about 10 years ago and many will never forget the news coverage of this tragic event. RIP Sgt Sean Gannon.
Two Campus Police Officers greeted me outside their office to discuss how we/I would get over to the field. One officer even escorted me with his vehicle to the field, via the emergency service road that put me/us right behind the bleachers. I thanked the officer for the escort and mentioned that I would be just a few moments, then depart myself. I started with a walk up the bleachers to get a full view of Lou Gorman Field.

Lou Gorman was born in Rhode Island, attended prestigious LaSalle Academy in Providence, was a multi-sport athlete at Stonehill College, was a United States Navy Officer, and a respected baseball executive. Most baseball people know him as the General Manager for the Seattle Mariners, then the Boston Red Sox. Gorman oversaw operations for the Boston Red Sox for a ten year period, reaching the World Series in 1986. Gorman is a member of the Stonehill College Hall of Fame as well as the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame. To say he lived a full life on and off the field is putting it mildly.
Lou Gorman Field, home of the Stonehill College Skyhawks Baseball team, was in fantastic shape. The grass looked amazing for an early May New England afternoon. Baseball ready for sure – infield groomed, foul lines clean, dugouts clean – almost as if there was going to be a game played there any moment. From the bleachers, I walked around the perimeter of the field to catch some alternate views. In the right field area, I noticed some players starting to show up, perhaps for some batting practice, so I hustled to get a few more photos before departing.

It was a great visit to Easton, MA and Stonehill College to check out Lou Gorman Field. Huge thanks to the security team from the front gate to the officers allowing me to visit the campus and feel safe. It was awesome to read the plaque on fallen hero SGT Sean Gannon and see his impact on the Stonehill community. And to take a short but sweet tour of Lou Gorman Field before the team got out there for practice. Overall, it was an awesome Easton baseball experience touring Lou Gorman Field, home of the Stonehill College Skyhawks.
Stonehill College, who plays in the NEC conference for baseball, wraps up their 2026 regular season against a familiar foe, local Hampton Roads NEC up and comers Norfolk State University starting Thursday May 14th at Lou Gorman Field. Timing and opportunity, I just missed NSU by a week or so. Anyway, it should be a great NEC matchup between these two school with nearly identical records finishing out the 2026 Baseball Season.
