Would The Boston Red Sox Consider This Move Tomorrow To Become Part Of Baseball History?

The following post from MLB and the Boston Red Sox on X is not a misprint.

The Boston Red Sox will finish their 2026 season on the road playing a home game in another state, Florida. The current weather situation from my adopted home state of Virginia to the coast of Maine and beyond is a windy, wet, inclement, dangerous fall Nor’easter that closely resembles a tropical storm. The Red Sox have already altered their schedule of games for this weekend several times in the past few days due to worsening weather and forecasts by playing a doubleheader on Friday. Saturday and Sunday’s home games were likely to be a complete washout in Boston. So, MLB shifted the final game vs. the Chicago Cubs to the beautiful city of Tampa and the not so beautiful, yet indoor park of the Tampa Bay Rays, Tropicana Field. The Red Sox and Cubs are due to play Sunday at 3:05pm. First question before my historic post question – why not play in Fort Myers at JetBlue Park, home of the Boston Red Sox Spring Training site???

Okay, are you sitting down? Have you pulled over to the side of the road so you can read this and perhaps comment? Have you put down that great book you are reading? Turned off the radio, silenced the TV, let the dogs out into the fenced yard so you can you have absolute focus on what I am about to present? Good, here goes…For tomorrow’s game, why not make baseball history in an otherwise meaningless game win/loss wise, do something that has only been done 5 times in a Major League game (according to the internet, which is always accurate), and pencil in a player who could make baseball history during the last game of the season. What kind of historical accomplishment could be had without truly affecting the play of the game nor the outcome, most likely? A player who plays every single position on the field, including pitcher. Here is how I see it happening, if at all. And the most likely player to do it!

In order for a Major League Baseball player to play all 8 defensive positions in the field in a Major League game, the 99/100 scenario is he needs to be a right handed defensive player. Left handed throwers are not going to play in a Major League game at 2nd, SS, 3rd, or Catcher. That is a fact, and in all honesty would be sort of an insult to the other team. So, in this scenario, we can rule out all of the Red Sox pitchers – starters and relievers – and the likes of RF Wilyer Abreu. With recent injuries and players ramping up for the postseason, it is also a 99/100 scenario that stars like Roman Anthony, Trevor Story, Willson Contreras, and Ceddanne Rafaela would be risked in a stunt like this, the risk being if they got hurt, the fans would never forgive management (or me for suggesting it). So that leaves the amazing and versatile Boston Red Sox reserves. And from this pool, I believe we can find the one.

The 2026 Boston Red Sox have a host of utility players on their roster that have made sizable contributions to the team making the playoffs and succeeding when most counted them out. Players like Nick Sogard, Mickey Gasper, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, and Andruw Monasterio, just to name a few, have played multiple positions in the field, batted in multiple spots in the lineup, and have helped the Red Sox fill important roster gaps when other players were down and injured. Their contributions made a huge impression with Red Sox fans everywhere, including myself. So, amongst all of the Red Sox Reserves, who is the one player who could make a historic start tomorrow afternoon against the Chicago Cubs and potentially play all 8 defensive positions and perhaps get into the game as a Pitcher to become part of baseball history? I have the guy for the job – Anthony Siegler.

Why Siegler? Why not? I went right to the source – Baseball Reference. I pulled up Anthony Siegler and found my guy! Here is the argument. Siegler came up through the minors as a catcher. With Hudson Valley (NYY organization), Siegler caught and played the outfield in 2021. In 2023 for Somerset (NYY), Siegler played catcher, 2B, and played the outfield. In 2025 with Nashville (MIL Brewers organization), Siegler once again showed his versatility splitting time between 3rd and 2nd base, and behind the plate. And Siegler continued to show his value at the Major League level with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2025, playing games at 1B, 3B, C, and…Pitcher. Siegler got into one game, pitched one inning, gave up one hit, and in the end no runs. After moving over to the Boston Red Sox organization in 2026, Siegler has been the ultimate team player in the field, playing games at 2nd and 3rd base as well as hitting as the DH for the Sox. Anthony Siegler would be my vote for this historic opportunity tomorrow in Tampa.

So, in order for Siegler to get onto the mound and into the history books, a few things need to fall in place. The MLB rules state:

A position player can only take the mound as a pitcher if at least one of the following conditions is met:

Trailing Team: The team is losing by 8 or more runs at any point in the game.
Leading Team: The team is winning by 10 or more runs only in the 9th inning (or later).
Extra Innings: The game has reached extra innings

And here is why I believe it could work – Anthony Siegler can play every single position on the baseball field defensively because he is right handed. Siegler has in fact played every single defensive position on the diamond, broadly speaking, including the most difficult one – catcher at the minor and major league levels. Siegler has pitched an inning in a Major League game, 2025 with the Milwaukee Brewers. He is a more than capable as an infielder and likely as reliable as any backup in the outfield. Start him behind the plate and work him around the infield through the outfield and hope that the score of the game presents him with an opportunity to pitch. Make an otherwise meaningless game into a game Boston Red Sox, baseball fans will be talking about for generations to come. Pencil in Anthony Siegler to play all 8 defensive positions and hope the score pans out so he can complete a historic day in a Major League baseball game – one player playing all 9 positions in a Major League game!
