Monday night was 2 for 1 hamburgers and hot dogs at Dogwood Stadium. So, Rookie, Nora and their two hungry neighborhood dog friends, Dozier and Scout, decided to take in the game. And in the process, intend to ingest as many hamburgers and hot dogs as their stomachs would allow. Nora and Rookie were known for their big appetites. Dozier could hold his own but Scout was the real food king of the group. It was a beautiful night at the ballpark for the four best dog pals.
After the fourth round of hamburgers, Nora was suddenly in trouble. And in trouble, I mean she was choking. A piece of hamburger was stuck in her throat and she immediately placed her paw up on her throat area to signal her friends she needed help. Rookie, Dozier, and Scout looked on as Nora tried to cough up the hamburger piece. But it was too far lodged into her throat. Time for action.
Dozier hopped out of his seat and ran for help. “Good thinking, Dozier,” barked Rookie. Rookie reached down to the cup holder in front of his seat and grabbed a bottle of water. “Here, sis, you want to try to wash it down?” Rookie asked his sister, Nora. “I got a better idea,” barked Scout. “Nora, turn towards me. I got trained on this maneuver during my recent CPR class.”
And with a violent burst, Scout thrust himself into Nora’s stomach. The result…a hamburger piece pushed right up and out of Nora’s throat. “The old Heimlich maneuver, Scout style.” Nora was shocked and surprised. Rookie looked on with wonder. The medical staff member was in the background watching the Scout style move and rushed over to check on Nora. Scout had did it, Nora was safe.
“Hey, hey, what are you guys doing?” laughed Scout as Nora and Dozier hoisted the small yet powerful hero up onto their shoulders. Rookie and the fans around the action started to cheer and soon everyone got in on the celebration. The medical attendant said “wow, what a brave dog you are. And that move was executed perfectly.” Scout felt like he just won the mega-millions. “Hey, now you guys know what to do if I ever bite off more than I can chew, right?” barked Scout.
As the dog friends returned to their seats and perhaps more of the 2 for 1 food specials, a cameraman had found some stadium footage of the heroic event and sent it up to the stadium’s jumbo screen in center field. The neighborhood dog friends along with all of Dogwood Stadium’s fans watched Scout’s heroic thrust and collectively laughed at the stadium sound effects sound, “Whump.” Nora was safe, thanks to the fast acting work of Rookie, Dozier, the medical team, and especially Scout the Whumping Bulldog.
