On my way to New Jersey through Reading, PA on Monday, I happened upon a rather interesting structure – George Field. Located on the corner of N 5th St. is a massive stadium structure with the sign in clear view – George Field, Home of the Reading High Red Knights. Curious, I stopped in to check out what I could find out about George Field.

I followed N 5th Street to the next intersection, made a right, then another right, then another right to where I was staring at the front gate entrance of George Field. There was a large stone gate with the field name (George Field) in between the date -1909. On the sides of the stone entrance was “Class of 1914” etched into the upright structure. The wooden gate was closed and the field was completed surrounded by fencing, which was locked.

I did manage to snag a photo through the fencing.

And after doing some research online, I found this YouTube video detailing the history of George Field and its place in Reading baseball history:
Overall, a quick tangent before hopping on the highway heading east to New Jersey. A quick check on my Google Maps produced an unexpected and additional stop before I landed in NJ – Lehigh Valley IronPigs and Coca Cola Park. As for George Field, it was a cool structure to check out, albeit from afar. I love old baseball fields and was psyched to find it and experience it. The Reading baseball experience may need another day for me to explore all that it has to offer. Maybe one summer, I will take in a Fightin’ Phils game over at First Energy. Honestly, I was just glad that I got to visit Reading’s First Energy Stadium and George Field and escape a massive thunderstorm by about an hour or so.
