Tuesday afternoon, I had the timing and opportunity to tour a trio of Chicago area baseball experiences. If you missed Part I, you can read up on my trip to Impact Field, home of the Chicago Dogs. Next up, the Schaumburg Boomers and Wintrust Field. But first, I had to get out of the flight path of the hundreds of planes flying over me via the streets around the perimeter of O’Hare Airport. Which was a serious undertaking.
I was so happy to see the huge water tower with the Schaumburg Boomers logo on it. Wintrust Field, home of the Boomers, is just 15 or so miles from Impact Field but it seemed like it was like 100 miles with all the twists and turns and traffic on a busy Tuesday afternoon. I found parking in the lot next to the front gate entrance in a visitor’s parking spot, exhaled a huge sigh of relief, and snagged a great shot of my first look at Wintrust Field.
The Schaumburg Boomers play in the West Division of the Frontier League, a professional independent baseball league. The Boomers are sitting atop the West Division at 37-32, including 24-13 at home. The Boomers are managed by Jamie Bennett, who is in year 15 managing the Boomers. Per the team’s website, the Boomers team name “honors the Greater Prairie Chicken, a native bird of Illinois. The word “boomer” is a nickname for the male Greater Prairie Chicken. It refers to the loud booming sound the bird makes as it “dances” to assert its dominance over other males during mating season.”
Tuesday afternoon, Wintrust Field was closed to the public. The Boomers were on the road playing the playing the Mississippi Mud Monsters. There were ticket agents and team representatives out and about in the stadium area. I decided to just take a walk around the perimeter of the stadium and not bother the working Boomer staff. I don’t always get into the stadiums I visit but not to worry. It was a nice day for a walk around the parking lot area and the back end of the stadium. Here are a few photos I took along the way.
It was a fun trip around Wintrust Field to check out the Schaumburg Boomers experience. With the staff on hand and looking busy, I elected to just self tour around the stadium to catch what I could of the field, the stands, and any Boomers signage. Satisfied, I hopped in my rental car and pulled up my Ticketmaster app, then booked a ticket to my last stop of my Chicago trifecta of baseball experiences – Rate Field, home of the Chicago White Sox. Tuesday night’s game featured White Sox, Yankees, and the Grateful Dead. Stay tuned for my Chicago White Sox experience to be published later this week.
