Quick recap of my Dayton Baseball Experience – started at Day Air Ballpark, ventured over to the Dayton Walk of Fame to read up on the Dayton Marcos, then stopped over at Carillon Historical Park to learn more about the Clodbusters. One more stop to go on my Dayton daytrip of baseball experiences – the University of Dayton Flyers home baseball stadium, Woerner Field at AES Ohio Stadium.
An easy 5 minute drive or so from Carillon Park, over the W. Steward Street Bridge, down S Edwin Moses Blvd (yes, that Edwin Moses, the famous Olympic gold medal track star was born in Dayton, Ohio), and I was parked in the parking lot of AES Ohio Stadium. The front gate, near the ticket office, was wide open and I was psyched that I could potentially get into the stadium and take a few photos and add Woerner Field to my collection of college baseball fields.
As I walked in through the front gate, I was greeted by a Dayton Flyers camp counselor who asked me why I was there and we had a friendly chat. There was a day camp going on in the stadium and the kids were on a hydration break. I mentioned to the coach that I was only there to take a photo of the field and not any of the kids. He let me know in a polite way that it was his job to protect the kids and I agreed and applauded his efforts. Since the kids were out of the way of any photo of the field, sitting comfortably in the shaded stands, the coach allowed me to take one photo behind home plate, which I did.
The coach and I chatted for a bit after I snagged my photo. I thanked him for his time and allowing me to take a photo. And wished him and the campers a great day and left the inside of the stadium area. As I have stated in previous blogs, I don’t hop fences nor pick locks nor want to make anyone feel uncomfortable with my presence. In the end, if the coach had said no, I would have respected that and left without incident. On the way out, I was able to get a few more photos of the Woerner Field before hopping in my rental car to head back to my hotel.
In summary, it was an incredible day of Dayton baseball experiences and stories and ballparks. Day Air Credit Union, home of the Dayton Dragons, is a beautiful minor league baseball park. The Dayton Walk of Fame area has so much great history to read and learn about. Carillon Historical Park was amazing and the Deeds Carillon bell tower was spectacular. Woerner Field is a modern, college baseball stadium fit for baseball nearly 365 days a year. I was really lucky that a lot of these Dayton baseball experiences were so close to each other and I was able to get to all of them in a single day. If you are ever in the Dayton, Ohio area I highly recommend each and every one of these baseball experiences. Overall, it was a wonderful day of Dayton baseball experiences touring just a small sample of baseball spots in and around Dayton, Ohio, USA.
