The Baseball Spirits of Mel Ott and Lou Gehrig Alive in Western New York

On my recent business trip to Buffalo for ABF Freight, I had some personal time to explore some of Western New York’s baseball experiences.  I had the good fortune of finding not one but two incredible baseball complexes, each one special in their own right.  First,  here is a photo gallery of Amherst, NY’s Mel Ott Little League Complex.

One or two cool things caught my attention at Mel Ott Baseball.  First, I love designated T ball fields.  I love that it has a mound, bases, a fenced-in outfield, and a real feel baseball experience for the kids just starting out.  Mel Ott had a really cool one.  Second, the Mel Ott “big field” had no outfield fence.  Neither did my high school baseball field.  Hmmm, how many dingers would I have had if NKHS had a fence?  It’s probably the same as I had with no fence – zero.  Great visit and experience at Mel Ott.

The second Western New York baseball experience took me up and over to Lou Gehrig Youth Baseball League in nearby East Amherst.  With Lou Gehrig Day just a few days prior on June 4th, I thought it was fitting to honor the Yankees legend and check out the fields and league with his name attached to it.  Wow, I was absolutely blown away by this amazing Lou Gehrig baseball complex.

I spent about 20 to 30 minutes walking around this beautiful baseball complex and honestly could have spent hours more.  The attention to detail, the manicured grounds, the red painted barns, the immaculate walkways, the huge concession stand, the amazing baseball and softball fields – I was so psyched to find this place.  I even chatted with some volunteers getting the fields and parking area ready for weekend games, and they were super cool as well.  Seriously, it was one of the most impressive baseball experience complexes I have ever visited.   A must-see if you live in and around Western NY!

Two absolutely incredible baseball complexes there in Western NY in the city of Amherst.  Two sets of fields that are so well maintained, cared for, and above all, baseball ready.  Two amazing places for baseball memories to be made.  What an awesome day of Western NY baseball experiences!!!
