When I first started in the health club business back in 1994, marketing concepts revolved around mailers, cold calls, promotional events, and word of mouth. ย At the YMCA I worked at in Western Massachusetts, we didn’t have a huge marketing budget, so we created flyers by hand and made copies of exercises found in text books to hand out to our members. ย The other junior staff and I went through the phone book and made lists of area businesses to call upon or write letters to about programs, services, and potentially a membership. ย The present day marketing staff at a gym has access to email marketing, social media, YouTube, and much more. ย Technology has certainly changed the way health clubs market themselves.
Blog writing is one of the marketing tools a health club uses to promote, educate, and attract new members. ย A blog can be written by the fitness director about new equipment coming in. ย Or, the group exercise director about a charity event they are hosting. ย A health club blog can include an instructional video or colorful photos of the gym or a combination of both. ย Blogs are a great way to keep your current members informed who may not have or want to take part in social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. ย The blogs appear on your website and can be shared as press releases to local newspaper or media outlets. ย And, they can be shared with potential members. ย Here are some blog article ideas:
- Have a fitness staff member write about a new piece of equipment, what body part it works, and how the machine works. ย Include photos of the item or a video from the manufacturer’s website so the blog really gets the attention of the reader
- Introduce the new fitness instructor or group exercise coordinator or membership director. ย Include a photo of the staff person, their bio, and a quote telling everyone how excited they are to be a part of the team.
- Advertise a charity event. ย If you are raising money for a local organization or school or hospital program, let your membership base know about it. ย Charity is a great way to give back to your community and makes your health club more personal. ย It engages personal feelings with potential members who are looking for a positive health club experience.
