A Happy Baseball Father’s Day Message

I have been told by some that I am mildly obsessed with baseball. I beg to differ, I am absolutely obsessed with baseball. I have played, coached, volunteered, and wrote about baseball for over 40 years. After school practice most days, I would throw baseballs up on the roof of my mother’s barn and wait for them to topple down, hitting a shingle on a funny angle, then dive after it as it landed a few feet away from me. Over and over again. I would take my dog down to Wickford Middle School and hit tennis balls off the … Continue reading A Happy Baseball Father’s Day Message

In my search for incredible baseball resources here in Rhode Island, I met local coach, dad, physical therapist, baseball fundamentalist, and all around good guy Jason Harvey.  5 tool talent in baseball is considered to be a top level baseball player who has speed, power, defensive ability, and more.  After speaking with Coach Jason and learning about Elite Physical Therapy, his involvement with youth sports, and his coaching mindset with Little League and Ken Ryan Express Baseball, I would definitely label Jason Harvey as a 5 Tool Baseball Resource here in RI.  And now, here is Part 2 of my … Continue reading Part II of Getting To Know Jason Harvey – A 5 Tool Baseball Resource in RI

Your Guide To The 2018 St. Greg’s Friendship Tournament

I recently signed on to be one of the coaches for my North Kingstown Wickford Little League‘s Friendship Tournament season.  Friendship Baseball Tournaments tend to be less intense and focus more on the overall enjoyment of the game of baseball.  District (or All-Star) Tournaments tend to be more stressful – the parents are stressed, the kids are stressed, the coaches are stressed and everyone is more focused on winning, advancing in the tournament.  Don’t get me wrong, Friendship Tournament teams want to win as much as the District teams.  But the emphasis from the Friendship Tournament Directors is more about … Continue reading Your Guide To The 2018 St. Greg’s Friendship Tournament

Recent Poll Suggest Mercy Rule Is Good For Youth Baseball

As a player, coach, and fan of all levels of baseball, I have witnessed some incredibly lopsided wins (or losses depending on how you look at it.)  Wins and losses are part of sports, especially baseball.  Your goal is to score more runs than your opponent.  You don’t get credited with a win if you merely hit the ball hard or strike out a few batters.  Your team has to score runs on offense and prevent the other team from scoring when you are in the field on defense.  Pretty simple. Here is where it gets complicated – when you … Continue reading Recent Poll Suggest Mercy Rule Is Good For Youth Baseball

Balance And Posture Tips For Pitchers from Orthocore PT Ian Manning

The following article was forwarded to me from local physical therapist, Ian Manning of Orthocore Physcial Therapy.  Ian was kind enough to write to me about balance, posture, and strength as it pertains to pitching.  Any questions about this article, the exercises, the definitions, etc can be directed to Ian Manning via his website – http://www.orthocorept.com. Balance and posture were the first two mechanical flaws I was taught to look for when becoming certified through the National Pitching Association (NPA). The NPA is a group that was founded by Tom House, who is the throwing coach for the “G.O.A.T.” (Tom … Continue reading Balance And Posture Tips For Pitchers from Orthocore PT Ian Manning
