Wickford Little League Awards Night – High Fives, Trophies, and Memories Galore

Wickford Little League held its Annual Awards Banquet on Monday, September 12th.  The banquet was held at Quonset’s “O” Club, just passed the North Kingstown Golf Course.  Player, coaches, volunteers, sponsors, and family members gathered to honor the many, many great things that make Wickford Little League a Rhode Island tradition for over 50 years.  President Arnie Sarazen presided over the event as emcee.  Raffles from sponsors as well as other prizes were available during the night, with some great prizes being handed out.  Dinner was delicious, the mood was festive, and the Wickford Little League community was in great … Continue reading Wickford Little League Awards Night – High Fives, Trophies, and Memories Galore

The Boy Scouts of America – Community Service, Camping, and Lasting Friendships

My son Harrison has grown up with several close friends from Kindergarten to 5th grade at Fishing Cove Elementary.  One of them, Cameron Boyd, was a member of Harrison’s Cub Scout troop for years.  I asked Cameron’s Mom, Leigh Anne Boyd, what her impressions of scouting were?  What would she say to someone thinking about joining scouts here in North Kingstown.  And how can someone, especially a new family to North Kingstown, benefit from the scouting program.  Here is an excerpt from our conversation along with some great photos of some active scouts in our area.  Notice the smiles in every photo. … Continue reading The Boy Scouts of America – Community Service, Camping, and Lasting Friendships

40th and Final Pilkington Tournament Taking Place Friday August 19th

A few months back, The NK Blog wrote about local entrepreneur Deanna Russo and her company, Bow-K.  Deanna sent me a message through social media regarding a special event that she wanted to post and share on the NK Blog.  The event is called “The Pilkington Memorial Golf Tournament.”  Remarkably, this is the 40th year the event has taken place.  And, this marks the final year, according to event planners, of the tournament.  The tournament is taking place at Laurel Lane Country Club in West Kingston. According to Deanna, “this is the longest running golf tournament in the state of … Continue reading 40th and Final Pilkington Tournament Taking Place Friday August 19th

Star Wars, The Force Awakens Part of NK’s Movies On The Beach

Many years ago, in a galaxy not so far away, I saw the very first Star Wars movie at a drive-in theater located just over the North Kingstown line in East Greenwich.  Yes, there was a drive-in theater locally here and it was very well attended, especially in the summer months.  This was where my family and I watched Luke, Han Solo, Darth Vader, and the amazing cast and characters of George Lucas battle it out for intergalactic supremacy.  It was shown on a massive screen, which made the spaceships, battle scenes, odd characters, and overall experience so very impressive to … Continue reading Star Wars, The Force Awakens Part of NK’s Movies On The Beach

The North Kingstown Marketing Company is working with a well respected local bicycle shop that has recently closed its doors after over 50 years in business.  East Providence Cycle was a mainstay in the Rhode Island bicycle and fitness market at their Warren Avenue location in East Providence.  Since the business has changed hands to Narragansett Bicycle or NBX, there are some remaining inventory items that are available at very competitive prices.  Specifically, Specialized gear like bike shorts, Schwinn exercise equipment, and Bowflex strength systems.  Here are some highlights of the inventory sale: Schwinn Recumbent Bike – Backdraft – Airdyne … Continue reading Huge Inventory Reduction Sale on Bicycle Apparel, Gear, and Accessories

The Swim Tether Keeps Me In Place and In Shape

Every year, about this time, the Save The Bay swim event happens.  It is an amazing spectacle of open water swimming combined with a dedicated organization intent on saving our most precious Narragansett Bay for the present and future of Rhode Island.  I was lucky enough to finish it two years, 2009 and 2010.  I love open water swimming.  In fact, I prefer open water swimming to lap swimming in an indoor pool.  Open water swimming is not just about fitness, its about connecting with nature – the ocean, lake or bay you are swimming in.  The scenery of the coastline, … Continue reading The Swim Tether Keeps Me In Place and In Shape

How Parades Through Wickford Energize Our Spirits, Our Economy, Our Town

Wickford, Rhode Island can be described as many things.  Coastal village, family orientated community, eclectic stores, scenic, traditional, old school with modern conveniences.  I am sure I am missing a few but I would also add my own.  One of the best towns to host, watch, or participate in a parade.  Wickford has always been an amazing place for parades.  Classic cars, middle and high school bands, girls scouts, cub scouts, seniors, toddlers, politicians, dogs, bikers, veterans. They start early in the spring, with Wickford Little League marching to Wilson Park for Opening Day.  We have the proud and often … Continue reading How Parades Through Wickford Energize Our Spirits, Our Economy, Our Town

An Interview With Sean Maloney – Parenting, Baseball, and Why You Should Attend the Jog For Julie Event

I have known Sean Maloney for more than 30 years.  We grew up here in North Kingstown, a year apart, and played recreation sports like basketball and baseball with and against each other.  Sean was a standout on the baseball team I was lucky enough to be part of at North Kingstown High School.  As his career progressed into college and then eventually into professional baseball, I followed his progress through friends and the occasional newspaper article.  I remember running into him at the gym sometime in his pro career and told him how proud I was to have played … Continue reading An Interview With Sean Maloney – Parenting, Baseball, and Why You Should Attend the Jog For Julie Event
