An Interview with Jason LeClair, Artist Extraordinaire, RISD Instructor

In yesterday’s NK Blog, I wrote about my son Griffin’s incredible experience at RISD’s Young Artist Program.  Griffin has learned advanced techniques, theory, and skills which will further his drawing and cartooning.  His instructor, once a teenage cartoonist, now the instructor is Jason LeClair.  I recently caught up with Jason on cartooning, the program, and art.  Here is an excerpt from our conversation.  And click on the links in this article to see some of Jason’s amazing work!!! Jam Stage – Plug In, Tap The Microphone, And Record Your Music

For the past few years, my basement has served as a pseudo recording studio for the musician in my house, namely my son Spencer.  We have a drum kit, guitars, amplifiers, microphones, and harmonicas set up in the basement. When the music is playing, he is not only entertaining those in the house, but most likely the neighbors surrounding me.  This past fall, one of my neighbors recognized a song my son was playing on the drums. And he lives 3 houses down the lane.  Needless to say, it gets pretty loud.  Bonus is my son is a very good … Continue reading Jam Stage – Plug In, Tap The Microphone, And Record Your Music

Special Night For Everyone at the North Kingstown Special Olympics Christmas Party

A few weeks back, the NK Blog reported on a night of music with local North Kingstown teens.  These talented teens played guitar, drums, sang, and did sketches in front of a lively crowd, showcasing to all how talented our North Kingstown teens are.  The night was also about cultivating civic pride and generating donations for a local organization, the North Kingstown Special Olympics.  The teens raised $205.50 that night with Coach Lisa McKay in attendance.  When I mentioned the donation amount to Lisa the next day, she was ecstatic. Coach Lisa and I wanted the teens to present the … Continue reading Special Night For Everyone at the North Kingstown Special Olympics Christmas Party

Vinnie Pazienza Sports Memorabilia on NK Marketing Ebay Store

In previous blogs, I have written about a local sports collector named Greg Henderson.  On my ebay store, I have helped Greg sell some of his collection of sports memorabilia from legends such as Muhammad Ali and Arnold Palmer.  In the past few days, Greg has dropped off a number of sports collectibles related to local Rhode Island boxing legend, Vinnie “The Paz” Pazienza.  Pazienza is the subject of a national film release called “Bleed For This” which comes out in movies theaters this week.  From the massive press coverage locally and on national TV shows, this film looks to … Continue reading Vinnie Pazienza Sports Memorabilia on NK Marketing Ebay Store

NK Teen Open Mic Night – Celebrating Talented NK Teen Musicians

The NK Teen Open Mic Night, hosted by the North Kingstown Marketing Company, was a huge success.  The event occurred at the North Kingstown Town Beach’s Cold Spring Community Center on Thursday, November 10th.  Teenage musicians living in North Kingstown and surrounding areas were invited to showcase their talents in a safe, friendly open mic format.  The event was also intended to raise money and civic pride in a local community organization, the Special Olympics of North Kingstown.  A donation box was set up at the entryway of the center so guests could donate to this great, local organization.  As … Continue reading NK Teen Open Mic Night – Celebrating Talented NK Teen Musicians

North Kingstown Teen Open Mic Night – Thursday November 10th

North Kingstown Schools are blessed to have incredible music programs and music teachers.  My children have all participated in music programs at Fishing Cove Elementary, Wickford Middle School, and now the North Kingstown High School.  At each school level, there are concerts where parents, grandparents, neighbors, and friends can attend to listen to the student’s progress in their instrument of choice.  These concerts always impress me – the teachers getting students to play together, the progress a student makes in his/her instrument over the school year, and the incredible turnout from loved ones there to support not only their child but … Continue reading North Kingstown Teen Open Mic Night – Thursday November 10th

The Total Gym Gravity Training System – 200 Exercises In One Machine

What most people perceive as strength training exercises in the fitness industry has definitely evolved over the past 50 years.  Some people think of strength training as Olympic plates on a long bar pressed over your head.  Or perhaps pulling a wide bar downward, which has a cable attached to it connected to a weight stack.  Or, sitting in a leg sled and pushing a weighted carriage up on a 45 degree angle working your legs.  Or, flipping a truck tire or doing pull-ups or lunges.  All these people would be correct – these are all strength training exercises.  Done correctly, all … Continue reading The Total Gym Gravity Training System – 200 Exercises In One Machine

Attention North Kingstown Business Owners, I Have $75 To Spend By October 15

This past spring, I was lucky to represent Wickford Little League as AAA division manager.  Our team had a great fan base – moms, dads, grandparents, aunts, uncles, neighbors, friends.  Every game we played the fans cheered, the players got better and better, and it was truly a very special experience.  At the end of the season, I was surprised with an envelope containing a gift from the fans.  A gift totaling $75 in North Kingstown Chamber of Commerce gift certificates.  $25 each and to be redeemed for merchandise at participating chamber businesses. So, I am reaching out to all … Continue reading Attention North Kingstown Business Owners, I Have $75 To Spend By October 15

Providence’s Lupo’s Heartbreak Hotel Welcomes Lettuce Tonight

One of the great features in my Tahoe is my Sirius XM satellite radio.  I enjoy a wide range of music, so satellite radio is great on days I want blues or jazz or comedy or jam bands.  I can listen to the Grateful Dead channel or Pearl Jam Radio or decades specific stations like the 60’s, 70’s, or 80’s.  One of my favorite channels is Sirius XM Channel 29, Jam On.  Jam On features great jam band heroes of mine such as Gov’t Mule, Widespread Panic, and Dave Matthews Band.  It also features lesser known acts like Tauk, The … Continue reading Providence’s Lupo’s Heartbreak Hotel Welcomes Lettuce Tonight

North Kingstown High School Mattress Fundraiser Event – Sunday Sept. 25th

The typical fundraising campaign is one of the first business lessons a school age child learns.  Whether it is popcorn sales as a Boy Scout or those delicious cookies at Stop and Shop as a Girl Scout or the football calendars the NK Football team brings by my house every September, kids learn valuable skills about sales and business.  Knowing your product, asking for the sale, asking for another sale, an “up sale” perhaps, collecting money, on and on, delivering the product, and the follow up.  Fundraisers are a great way for kids to learn valuable people skills and a … Continue reading North Kingstown High School Mattress Fundraiser Event – Sunday Sept. 25th
