Biomes Marine Biology Center is North Kingstown’s Connection to Narragansett Bay Marine Life

Biomes Marine Biology Center has been connecting North Kingstown families to the wonders and marine life of Narragansett Bay for thirty years. Growing up along the water, exploring the wide range of marine life has always been a great joy of mine. Whether it was the barnacles which collected on the “rock” or the horseshoe crabs at the North Kingstown Town Beach or various sea creatures and vegetation under and around the rocks at Beavertail Lighthouse, I find all marine life fascinating.  Most New England marine enthusiasts are familiar with the larger aquariums in our area – Mystic, CT and Boston, MA. … Continue reading Biomes Marine Biology Center is North Kingstown’s Connection to Narragansett Bay Marine Life

Rhode Island Lifeguard Tournament Showcases The Best and Most Capable Lifeguards Guarding Our Beaches

Whether you are new to RI or have lived here your entire life, most will agree that Rhode Island has some of the most incredible beaches on the east coast, perhaps the entire USA.  These amazing beaches range from cove type beaches (which are great for families and have little to no surf) to surf beaches, which attract tons of beach goers, surfers, photographers, and nature lovers.  The surf beaches do have added risk due to potentially high surf, dangerous undertow at times, and the high volume of people on the beach itself.  The safety of the surf and the … Continue reading Rhode Island Lifeguard Tournament Showcases The Best and Most Capable Lifeguards Guarding Our Beaches

BrUOG – Brown University Oncology Research Group Event at Quidnessett Country Club

To say I grew up in a household filled with medical professionals would be about as accurate as the Red Sox need Pedro to suit up his number 45 and pitch us out of this slump.  Both of my parents were active in medicine for close to 40 years and have provided me with countless volumes of their hands-on medical knowledge.  To say that cancer has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember would, sadly, be equally as accurate. I lost my nanny to cancer, have lost high school friends to cancer, and currently … Continue reading BrUOG – Brown University Oncology Research Group Event at Quidnessett Country Club

Steve Smith and the Nakeds To Perform at the Narragansett Seafood Festival

Being musically gifted is one thing.  Being entertaining in your living room with your family cheering you on is one thing.  Being musically gifted and able to entertain a large crowd is a combination that many attempt but few can pull off.  Musicians can be socially awkward and misunderstood. And in front of a crowded arena or nightclub, this may drive a wedge between the musician and the crowd.  A crowd, especially a paying crowd, want to be entertained not only by the music but also by the musician(s).  This is often the role of the front man and most often … Continue reading Steve Smith and the Nakeds To Perform at the Narragansett Seafood Festival

The MAE Organization for the Homeless Basics Drive Proving Charity Comes in Many Forms

Some of the richest men and women on Earth are charitable with a portion of their financial success.  The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation comes to mind, with initiatives in world health, poverty, and education.  The Clinton family has a foundation which deals with public health issues that affect not only Americans but the world population.  Major sports and entertainment figures have foundations, charities, and non-profits set up in their name to battle disease or drugs or educational challenges with troubled youth.  These individuals have the financial means to give money to support their charities of choice. What if you … Continue reading The MAE Organization for the Homeless Basics Drive Proving Charity Comes in Many Forms

Poetry and Art Exhibit Opening Friday July 24th, Featuring Poetry, Art, and Music

One of my favorite things about this year’s Wickford Art Festival was getting to know some of the artists we covered here on the NK Blog and then meeting them in person at the festival.  In working with Judy Salvadore, the director of the Wickford Arts Festival, I got a chance to learn more about the artists, see their work, and learn about their inspirations.  One such artist was Coventry’s Beth Johnston.  She created a beautiful piece of art featuring a swimmer.  Being from a family of swimmers, I took special notice of this piece and was glad to have … Continue reading Poetry and Art Exhibit Opening Friday July 24th, Featuring Poetry, Art, and Music

Wally, Trophies, and Charity Will be Present at Wicked Fish this Sunday, July 19th

I was fortunate to go to Game 2 of the 2013 World Series between the Boston Red Sox and the St. Louis Cardinals.  My ticket from that game is hanging in my office.  I remember how special that year was – the beards, the tragedy of the Boston Marathon, and the team that lifted the spirits of Red Sox Nation.  Yes, there have been other championships but this one hit home to the millions of families in New England and the nation affected by what happened on Patriots Day, April 15, 2013.  Driving the point home in an impassioned speech, … Continue reading Wally, Trophies, and Charity Will be Present at Wicked Fish this Sunday, July 19th
