Godzilla – My Take on a Remake

Godzilla is an action and adventure film. Godzilla stars Bryan Cranston, Aaron Taylor Johnson.  This version is a remake of a movie classic that was originally released in 1954.  In this modern day version, Godzilla is called upon to face not one but two extremely dangerous and destructive Mutos.  These Mutos are feeding off of nuclear energy wherever they can find it and, in the process, are destroying major cities, roads, and bridges in their path.  Will Godzilla get to them before the Mutos destroy every major US city in their quest for energy? The movie has tons of awesome fight scenes with … Continue reading Godzilla – My Take on a Remake

Beyond the Diagnosis – Art Exhibit Featuring Artists and Their Subjects

Imagine being handed a slip of paper with the math problem: 2+2=? Pretty simple, right? Most people would get the answer correctly.  How about a word problem where two trains are travelling towards each other at different speeds, and the question is where do they meet and who travels further?  Again, given the information, you and possibly a helper can probably figure it out.   Now imagine a math problem so complex that it takes 8 years to complete.  And, in the span of time you and others are attempting to figure out this math problem, a person close to you … Continue reading Beyond the Diagnosis – Art Exhibit Featuring Artists and Their Subjects

A Basketball Game Worth Watching from Tip Off to the Final Buzzer

This week I watched an NCAA basketball game and was absolutely amazed at the talent level.   The point guards at the basketball game were handling the ball with incredible skill.  One point guard took the ball coast to coast with lightning speed and precision, weaving in and out of 4 defenders, and eventually passing the basketball to a wide open player for a 3 point shot.  The forwards had unbelievable post up moves and could hit mid range jumpers with ease. The centers blocked shots and played tough defense.  A prominant player, a 3 time Finals Most Outstanding Player, scored only … Continue reading A Basketball Game Worth Watching from Tip Off to the Final Buzzer

Changeup – The Most Important Pitch A Young Pitcher Can Learn

Opening Day 2015 for the Boston Red Sox was a huge success.  Runs, great pitching, a revamped offense, and that glorious hope of getting back to the championship level of play Red Sox fans want and let’s face it, demand.  Clay Buchholz won his first start and looked very, very sharp.  I’ve watched CB for quite a few years now.  The photo above was taken in the grassy centerfield area of McCoy Stadium about 6 years ago of Clay warming up. One of the many pitches in Clay Buchholz’s arsenal on the mound is a changeup.  A changeup is essentially a … Continue reading Changeup – The Most Important Pitch A Young Pitcher Can Learn

Park Your Car and Walk Through A Village

I have been lucky enough to grow up on a small town that has a ton of character. Wickford Village is situated on the water and has interesting buildings, shops, people, natural beauty, you name it.  There is a main throughway through Wickford as well as a number of side streets to marinas, residences, and small shops.  There is public parking as well as street parking in front of restaurants, jewelry stores, and other retail shoppes.  If you drive through Wickford and look around, you will see a pretty good share of these things I’ve mentioned.   But, my recommendation is … Continue reading Park Your Car and Walk Through A Village

WMS Captures Superior Rating at RIMEA Band Festival at NK High School

I’m a proud member of the band at Wickford Middle School.  I play in the percussion group along with 8 other students – including 7th and 8th graders – under the leadership of my music teacher, Mr. Iadevaia.  We have been practicing extra hard these past few weeks in preparation for the RIMEA Band Festival. That festival took place at the North Kingstown High School last Thursday, April 2 and here are the details. There were 13 bands invited to the RIMEA Band Festival from all over the state of RI.  Six bands, including Wickford Middle School, participated in the morning … Continue reading WMS Captures Superior Rating at RIMEA Band Festival at NK High School

Punk Rock – A Roby/Walsh Tradition Dating Way Back to The Long Valley

The recent surge in music in my household – guitars, drums, harmonica, shower vocal performances – led me to explore my families roots in music.  I searched through archive photos as well as newspaper articles both here and where my family roots are in County Kerry, Ireland.  What I discovered, truly amazed me and really tied together a lot of who I am as a music lover as well as how my kids are so musically inclined. I have been following punk rock bands for years despite being somewhat of a straight edge.  I never put two and two together … Continue reading Punk Rock – A Roby/Walsh Tradition Dating Way Back to The Long Valley

A Penny Provides Me With More Than Just One Cent

A penny for your thoughts… The next time you get a penny in your hand, try what I do.  Look at the year it was minted. Think about that year – a sporting event, a concert you went to, a family event such as the birth of child or wedding. For me, I always think of who won the World Series that year.  Some of the more recent years are pretty easy to get. But, the older the penny, the more my brain has to work.   And to go along with that, the older the penny, the more character … Continue reading A Penny Provides Me With More Than Just One Cent

YouTube and the Aspiring Musician

YouTube has become a staple in our society. Videos are used to market businesses, promote bands, sell products, create awareness, the list is endless.  Entire careers have been launched simply by posting a video to YouTube and sharing it with friends, the media, you name it.  You can find just about anything on YouTube these days. I got into playing guitar late in life. I played the piano as a teenager and learned how to read music as well.  Over the years, I picked up the harmonica and have become somewhat listenable at that instrument.  I’ve played the recorder, the … Continue reading YouTube and the Aspiring Musician
