A Month Long Journey Is Realized On A Thrilling Morning’s Ride

Every year I go to an amusement park and ride the most exhilarating rides in the park.  It usually takes me about a month to get there and I always bring my family and friends with me.   The lines are often long and I have to wait, sometimes for hours, for my turn to ride.  Having said that, I love this amusement park ride and would gladly wait hours just to have the memories.  I take baby steps in line, eventually getting to a curve where I can see the start of the ride.   The anticipation builds as I see … Continue reading A Month Long Journey Is Realized On A Thrilling Morning’s Ride

A Community Radio Station for North Kingstown?

Letter to the Editor: When congress passed the Local Community Radio Act, it brought about one of the biggest opportunities in U.S. history for nonprofits and community organizations to affordably access the air waves. In the capitol city, Providence Community Radio will be launching shortly on 101.1 FM. Nonprofits have the chance to apply for a non-commercial FM radio license, or LPFM. A LPFM station could serve as a local broadcast studio, community center or multimedia training site.  This would be a powerful tool for any organization as 90 percent of Americans currently say they listen to the radio at … Continue reading A Community Radio Station for North Kingstown?

Treadmill Buyer’s Guide – 5 Things You Should Know This Treadmill Season

Most runners would agree that one of the best parts of the running experience is just being outdoors.  Running on trails, in neighborhoods, around a quarter mile track, in your local village offers you fresh air, potentially great scenery, and that special something that keeps most runners outside well into winter.  Well, what if you are a runner and don’t like to brave the elements of winter?  You can make your way indoors to a local health club or university gym and get on the treadmill. Perhaps there is a gym at your office or school that you can hop on a treadmill … Continue reading Treadmill Buyer’s Guide – 5 Things You Should Know This Treadmill Season

The Cerebral New England Patriots Have An Advantage Like No Other NFL Team

I started playing chess when I was in elementary school.  My father taught me how to play.  He was, and is, very smart.  My father had studied the greats of chess, read books and watched film on chess moves and strategies.  And strategy played a huge role in how he played me, my brother, or whomever his opponent was.  Every move he taught me on the chessboard meant something, something that was to be realized several moves later.  By moving a pawn up two squares instead of one meant clearing a space for the bishop to activate when ready.  Moving … Continue reading The Cerebral New England Patriots Have An Advantage Like No Other NFL Team

Three Great Machines To Help Cure The Boredom of Your Exercise Routine

In researching an article I am writing about health clubs, I found a great article on WebMD on “The Top  6 Exercise Excuses And How to Beat Them.”  I found it to be a bit humbling to read some of the excuses I have for not exercising included on this list.  WebMD is a trusted resource when it comes to just about anything medically speaking, so I thought I would put my spin on excuse #4, “Exercise is Boring.” In fact, exercise can be extremely boring.  But, it doesn’t have to be. If you do the same routine on the … Continue reading Three Great Machines To Help Cure The Boredom of Your Exercise Routine

My Prediction for the World Series Champion is…

One thing I have learned in all of my years watching Major League playoff baseball is that anything can happen.  Rosters stacked with talent somehow lose to rosters stacked with rookies.  A pitching juggernaut during the regular season turns into a batting practice failure in the playoffs.  The intensity, the lights, the interviews, the crowds, everything is amplified in the playoffs leading up to the World Series.  Who will win the trophy this year?  I’m confident of one thing – my Boston Red Sox will not. So, who is the best team and who is playing the best?  This is … Continue reading My Prediction for the World Series Champion is…

Working Out in October – The Concept2 Rower At West Bay YMCA

Fall is here, the weather is getting cooler, outdoor pools are closing, and exercisers are turning their attention towards working out indoors.  This month on the North Kingstown Blog, I will be focusing on working out – off season training for baseball players, indoors at a fitness center, or some exercises you can do in your living room watching football.  I will be interviewing local personal trainers as well as visiting local health clubs to learn more about “Working Out in October.” As a longtime member of the YMCA, (my local Y is West Bay right here in North Kingstown) … Continue reading Working Out in October – The Concept2 Rower At West Bay YMCA

Baseball – A Fan’s Perspective

I finished up my 2015 baseball season yesterday with my youngest son and his Wickford Little League teammates.  Our team has been up and down this season but we finished with a strong performance yesterday.  Down by 2 runs with one last at bat, we came back with 4 runs to overtake our opponent, then my son closed it out with 3 strikeouts to end the game and secure a win for Wickford Little League.  It was a true team effort, with everyone contributing hits, defense, pitching and above all, enthusiasm for the game of baseball.   And, with just … Continue reading Baseball – A Fan’s Perspective

Dear Potential Business Owner Looking for Commercial Space

I take tons of pictures when I’m in Wickford.  It doesn’t matter what season it is, I find Wickford Village to be one of the most picturesque spots in all of Rhode Island.  I have friends and family that are from North Kingstown as well as other friends who came from out of state to work here, and have since moved away.  I share my photos on social media with the caption “This view never gets old.” However, one view that is getting entirely too old is the “For Sale” or “For Lease” signs that are prominent in Wickford Village. … Continue reading Dear Potential Business Owner Looking for Commercial Space

Congratulations David Ortiz, Red Sox Fans Salute Your 500th Home Run and Career

David Ortiz hit his 500 (regular season) home run last night against Matt Moore of the Tampa Bay Rays, becoming the 27th player in Major League Baseball to accomplish that feat. Ortiz has hit some of the most memorable home runs in the post season, which didn’t count towards his 500 mark, but certainly carry much more weight for Red Sox fans.  Ortiz wasn’t traded to the Red Sox as part of a blockbuster deal.  In fact, the Minnesota Twins released Ortiz in 2002 after some injury plagued years and modest output at the plate.  Of all the free agents … Continue reading Congratulations David Ortiz, Red Sox Fans Salute Your 500th Home Run and Career
