After a spirited hustle around the University of Notre Dame, I was about to head back to my hotel when I called an audible in the ND bookstore parking lot. I mapped out a nearby minor league park and found out that it was a mere 3 miles from my parking spot. With the sun setting, I had nary a second to spare. So, I hit start on my rental car’s GPS and began the short trip from ND over to Four Winds Field, home of the South Bend Cubs.

As I approached the downtown South Bend (Indiana) area, I started to think about my luck of the Irish moment – getting a chance to tour Jake Kline Field (ND University). Could my luck extend to another field, could another gate be open for me to enter and tour the stadium, could my South Bend baseball field experience be a cool 2 for 2? I found parking in front of a beautiful apartment or condo complex called The Ivy at Berlin Place. I walked the courtyard area and could see the entrance to Four Winds Field just ahead. My fingers were crossed and the sun had not set yet. Let’s go!!!

I arrived at the gate to Four Winds Field with a big smile on my face. And the fact that the gates were closed as far as the eye could see, that was totally fine with me. I got an eyeful of the field and the ticket booth area and this really cool courtyard entrance to Four Winds. Here are some of the other cool photos from the Ivy at Berlin Place courtyard.

Four Winds Field is the home of the South Bend Cubs. The SB Cubs are the Single A – High Affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs sits about 100 miles from its South Bend affiliate field, Four Winds. You can learn more about Four Winds Field, the South Bend Cubs, and the history of baseball in South Bend, Indiana from their MILB page here – South Bend Cubs.
After returning to my car and seeing the sun just about set, I decided to find the front entrance to Four Winds Field and see if I could find any more South Bend Cubs treasures. There was some construction going on in front of the stadium, so I hopped out of the car and took just a few more photos before calling it a day in South Bend.

So my South Bend, Indiana afternoon of baseball experiences officially came to finish there at Four Winds Field. I popped my hotel into the GPS and hit start. Scenic route for a bit, Route 2 to Route 20, loved it. As I passed through the area of New Carlisle, Indiana, I hopped from EST back to CST and gained an hour of my day back. I had the incredible good fortune to visit two of the most iconic South Bend baseball locations in one afternoon. And I have the photos to prove it. Four Winds Field, home of the South Bend Cubs, was closed when I visited but I still got to tour the perimeter of the park, including the walk up via the courtyard at the Ivy at Berlin Place. That was such an amazing view, seeing the entrance at the end of the brick walkway. So jealous of all those residents of the Ivy, being that close to a professional baseball park with a ton of tradition there in South Bend. Overall, it was such a memorable day in South Bend, Indiana visiting the iconic and historic Notre Dame University and South Bend Cubs baseball fields.
