I am back in Virginia after an exciting few days visiting family and friends in my home state of Rhode Island. The travel plans, the weather, the flights, the food, everyone’s availability – I would put the trip at a roughly 9+ out of 10 for awesomeness. Seriously, it was great seeing everyone and I can’t wait to get back up to RI later this fall for another round of fun, food, family, and fun.
Time permitting on family trips up north, I always try to sneak in a trip over to one of my favorite Rhode Island baseball fields. And this trip, I had some free time one afternoon to stop in at West Warwick’s iconic McCarthy Field. McCarthy Field is a Rhode Island treasure, having hosted youth baseball games for decades. Heck, I even played there in high school for my North Kingstown Skippers as well as Babe Ruth and American Legion teams. As a baseball writer, I covered RIHS State Championship games there. I also covered a Wickford Middle School title game there. And RIMSBL (Rhode Island Mens Senior Baseball League) games there. McCarthy is well maintained by the City of West Warwick and is a must see field for any baseball field enthusiast.

I saw this post on the Cape Cod Baseball League’s IG page the other day. Calling all interns – do you want some major league experience with a league that has a ton of major league prospects? Head over to the official Cape Cod Baseball League IG page or their website to learn how you can apply to be an intern with a CCBL team next summer. These spots go fast and the interns get a tremendous media experience covering these top tier student athletes on the Cape.
Coming soon, in fact in about a month or so, in October of 2025, the inaugural Women’s Professional Baseball League Draft. Players recently tried out in front of scouts, managers, coaches, etc. for a shot at a spot in the newly formed WPBL. The WPBL is set to begin play in 2026 and players, teams, managers, and schedules will all be announced and revealed soon. Pretty cool league and I look forward to reading more about the players, teams, and upcoming schedule. For more information, head over to their official website – Women’s Professional Baseball League.
I have stumbled upon another amazing baseball community, featuring a concept I absolutely love – Sandlot Baseball. Nationwide, teams have formed to play a traditional game of baseball – gloves, bats, bases, balls, modern rules – in more of a pickup game concept. Tons of cool teams nationwide post their teams, their players, their game highlights on sites like Instagram. The creativity is fantastic, the team names are epic, and the play on the field looks super fun. And I am reaching out to teams and players and friending as many of them as I can find. What a cool network of baseball folks!!! How fun does this look…
One of my co-workers is strongly encouraging me to visit the University of Virginia and what he calls “The Dish.” The Dish is UVA Baseball’s home park, Disharoon Park, which looks absolutely stunning from the UVA Baseball page photos. Trust me, it is on my list to visit asap, and maybe I can catch a cool fall baseball game in the process. These dates below look mighty tempting!!!
MLB’s Arizona Fall League schedules, teams, and players were recently announced. This AFL is a great opportunity for up and coming players, most who are MLB prospects, to get a few extra innings in, a few extra swings in, and a bit more seasoning to get them Major League baseball ready. Also, a player who is coming off a tough year in the minors or perhaps missed significant time due to injury can benefit tremendously from the Arizona Fall League. Here are the rosters, schedules, and what you need to know about the 2025 AFL – Arizona Fall League.
A few months back, I had an opportunity to visit Globe Life Field and Globe Life Stadium, which are the current and former homes of the Texas Rangers. Actually, they sit across the street from each other in downtown Arlington, Texas. I will be traveling back to the Dallas area next week and hope to not only visit the parks, but actually attend a game and get inside the stadium photos. Stay tuned for that.

Finally, on a personal note, I want to extend a very Happy Birthday to my oldest son, Spencer. I wish you many happy fills on the drums, many happy concert memories, and many, many happy Red Sox game attendings. All the best to you, Spence.
