Sunday afternoon, while on a business trip to the Chicago/Northwest Indiana area, I did some baseball exploring in and around my hotel area. In the late morning hours, I took a short drive up to Gary, Indiana to visit the American Association’s Gary SouthShore RailCats’ Stadium, The Steel Yard. Gary, Indiana is a tough area to park and sightsee, I’ll just leave it at that. I did manage to snag a photo of the Steel Yard from the center field parking lot. Then, after a nice lunch at McAlister’s Deli, I hopped over to Crown Point, Indiana to catch the Lake County Corn Dogs 4pm game.

The Lake County Corn Dogs play in the Region Collegiate Baseball League. The Corn Dogs play their home games at Legacy Fields in Crown Point, Indiana, which was about a 15 minute drive from my hotel. I found parking in the back lot and made my way up to the ticket area/front gate. It was a beautiful, sunny, summer afternoon in Crown Point, Indiana with nearly ideal conditions for a baseball game.

Pre-game, I took a walk around the concession stand area, out passed the Corn Dogs pro shop area, kids playing cornhole, and out to the right field to take in the entire field. Really nice baseball complex, clean, well laid out, plenty of open spaces for families to let kids run around and be kids, plenty of bleacher seating for the rest of the fanbase.

As game time approached, I found a great seat in the bleachers just to the left of home plate. A local kid was celebrating his 9th birthday at the game, although the PA announcer first announced he was celebrating a 13th birthday, oops. The 9 year old birthday boy tossed a perfect strike as the celebratory “First Pitch.” The home team Lake County Corn Dogs ran out to their defensive positions accompanied by a representative of a local little league club. After the national anthem was proudly sung, it was Corn Dogs vs. The Chicago Clout.

By the middle of the first inning, the crowd at Legacy Fields was nearing filling up the bleachers. Kids would come in and go, check back in with parents for food, then head back out to the perimeter areas to hang out with friends. The weather was absolutely amazing, a bit humid, with temperatures comfortably in the mid to upper 80s. A breeze would kick in every so often, but nothing to affect play on the field. Two pretty competitive teams, summer collegiate level leagues, great looking field, what an awesome baseball find there in Crown Point.

After a few innings, I made my way to the exit gate and back to my nearby hotel. I was so psyched to catch a few innings of live game action featuring Region Collegiate Baseball League’s Lake County Corn Dogs and Chicago Clout. From what I read on the Corn Dog’s website (Lake County Corn Dogs), the Corn Dogs really took it to the Clout, routing the Clout 18-2. Legacy Field was absolutely amazing to catch a game at. Great fans, great community feel, tons of great memories made there game after game at Legacy for the local Crown Point baseball community. Overall, it was a very fun and enjoyable Crown Point baseball experience at Legacy Field, home of the Lake County Corn Dogs.
