Here are some of the summer collegiate and amateur baseball league box scores and game recaps from Saturday, May 31st that caught my attention on social media, team websites, and as a fan in the stands…
Coastal Plain League was busy last night. Rain in the area, lighting strikes, and players entertaining crowds during rain delays. Ok more on the entertainment piece in a minute. Here are the scores from last night’s action –
This fan (and Rachel) got to watch part of the Peninsula Pilots vs. Morehead City Marlins game at historic War Memorial Stadium, Hampton, VA last night. By the looks of the cars in the parking lot, on Pembroke Ave, and around the stadium, I wasn’t quite 100% sure I was going to get in. War Memorial Stadium was jam packed with fans. Great opening ceremony with kids singing the national anthem, so adorable. I think the Marlins were doomed from the start. Pilots take control of the game early and didn’t let go (fishing reference), winning a rain soaked, rain delayed contest 5-1.

I mentioned the rain delay and I have to mention the entertainment portion of the show. One that Peninsula Pilots first baseman, Grayson Fitzwater of VMI (Virginia Military Institute) took center stage. Starting with the letter dance routine everyone knows to the song “YMCA” and moving on to air guitar and sing lead air vocals on Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’,” Fitzwater showed up big time, firing up the crowd, making sure no one left in their seats during the rain delay was unentertained, and earning a ton of Pilot fans in the process. I might add that Fitzwater casually and confidently walked out and performed in front of the reported 2850 fans in attendance last night at War Memorial.

One score in from NABA Richmond – Deltaville Deltas over the Richmond Brewers 5-3.

The Madison Mallards continue to pack them in at historic Warner Park, aka The Duck Pond, and continue their winning ways. The Mallards blanked the Battle Creek Battle Jacks last night 6-0 in front of 6,750 fans. Wow, what an experience for those players and their families.
No games on the docket yesterday in the George Donnelly Sunset League. However, you can catch select live games and catch up on previous games on their YouTube Page – GDSL on YouTube. Like this one featuring Westcott vs. R&R Construction:
Rain in the Northeast was the big story last night in the Futures League. All games postponed until playing conditions are more favorable.

These tributes, like the one pictured below at the Milwaukee Milkmen game, never get old. Thank you to all who served our country!
The University of Rhode Island Rhody Rams baseball season comes to an end after losing their elimination game yesterday to Arkansas Little Rock. URI won the Atlantic 10 Conference and was the number 3 seed in the Baton Rouge Regionals of the NCAA D1 Baseball tournament. Congrats to players, coaches, and families (many of whom I know) on a historic 2025 run!
