Here Are The Baseball Stories I am Following Today – Rams, Jorge, Bryant, Mayer, and More

There is a ton of great baseball news happening right now. Here are the baseball stories I am following today, Sunday May 25, 2025.

The University of Rhode Island Rhody Rams baseball team has won the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship. Here is the release from their official baseball page – Rhody Rams.

Alexia Jorge, a Senior Catcher from Saint Elizabeth College, became the first female to start in a Coastal Plain League game. Congratulations Alexia and best of luck this summer in the CPL. Read more in CPL’s press release here – Alexia Jorge, Holly Springs Salamanders.

And there is this, via Holly Springs’ IG account:

A day Marcelo Mayer will never forget, nor will Boston Red Sox fans. Mayer, one of the top prospects in the Minor Leagues, and easily one of the two best prospects in the Red Sox organization, got the call to the Show yesterday. Mayer played 3rd base for the Boston Red Sox in last night’s 2-1 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. Here is his day chronicled via MLB.com – Marcelo Mayer gets called up.

Some personal news…After speaking this past week at the Tidewatchers Booster Club monthly meeting, I was connected to a baseball author and historian named Bryan Steverson. Steverson is the brother in law of one of the Tidewatchers and connected via telephone on Friday afternoon. Let me tell you, I feel like I spoke to a celebrity because Bryan was an absolute joy to speak to about baseball. His decades of time in the game as a writer, historian, and baseball fan give him such a special perspective on the game’s heroes and happenings. It was a pleasure and an honor to speak to this man, who has authored several books on the Negro Leagues, written copy for SABR produced articles, and is a kind steward of the game of baseball. Here is his bio via the Society of American Baseball Research, or as we know it, SABR:

Bryan Steverson is a lifelong baseball fan and a founding member of the East Tennessee Chapter of SABR. He is a Hall of Fame sustaining and Negro Leagues Baseball Museum member. As a researcher and writer, he has taught and given presentations at numerous local and national venues. Bryan is the author of three books on baseball, Amazing Baseball HeroesInspirational Negro League Stories (2011), Baseball, A Special Gift from God (2014), and the recently published Baseball’s Brotherhood Team (2018). In 2014 he was named the recipient of the Norman “Tweed” Webb Award for Lifetime Achievement by the Negro Leagues Committee of SABR. Originally from Portsmouth, Virginia, Bryan is a 1964 graduate of Virginia Tech. He is a veteran with an additional degree from the University of Minnesota and further post-graduate work at Cal Poly Pomona. In 2005, he retired from Alcoa, Inc. as Chief Metallurgist of the Rigid Packing Division. He and his wife, Barbara, have five children and nine grandchildren. They are currently in the process of relocating from Maryville, Tennessee to Venice, Florida.”

And here is what I will be watching for today. Bryant University Baseball is in the Championship Round of the America East Conference, with an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament at stake. Here is more from Bryant Athletics Baseball Page with what you need to know:
