Monday Morning Visit To Memorial Park, Texas Children’s Houston Open Site

Early Monday morning, before heading into work in Houston (ABF Freight), I took a short drive from my hotel just off I-10 to an incredible recreational park. Memorial Park Sports Complex is massive (by my standards) area of recreational land that provides fun and health and fitness for a wide range of activities. Look how much land it covers:

Two things in particular drew me to Memorial Park. One was this baseball field on the map that was a “big field” style that looked interesting. I parked just passed the softball fields and running oval at the baseball field and took a walk around the perimeter of the field. The sun was already shining brightly as I strolled around this Memorial Park baseball field.

Great looking field. You could have convinced me that this was a Spring Training Field the way the grounds looked. I especially liked the covered stands, which allows fans to watch the games without the sweltering sun bearing down on them. I believe I read somewhere online that local amateur league teams play there in the summer months. As the sun was hot on that Monday and I was thirsty, I wished I had remembered my water bottle for this contraption:

Nice setup there for humans and pets! As I left the baseball field area, I walked towards a pair of softball fields with these giant wooden bleachers. I have a “thing” for wooden bleachers at baseball games. There is just something about the worn wooden planks that makes me feel nostalgic. Very old school and I snapped a photo or two of the ones at Memorial.

The other reason I went over to Memorial Park is for golf. My son, Harrison, commented to me that I missed a major golf tournament the last time I was in Houston (2 weeks ago). Not being a gigantic golf fan, I was completely unaware that the Texas Children’s Houston Open was going on while I was in town. So, I popped over to the Memorial Park Golf Course area to see if I could find out for myself what I missed.

From what I could see, the Houston Open was played there. And on this Monday morning, there were golfers going into the course parking lot intent on playing there that day. There was a lot of excitement around the front gate area, as golfers were eager to tee off and play this course. Apart from that, it looked like a really nice play to golf and spend the afternoon. As for the Houston Open, local Texas and I believe #1 ranked golfer Scottie Scheffler came in a close second to first time PGA winner M.W. Lee, who shot a ridiculous 20 under par. At least, I think that’s good, maybe that’s what they shoot every week.

It was a fantastic start to my Houston week of work and baseball experiences. Memorial Park is located just off I-10, a very busy highway to say the least. This massive recreational site includes a dog park, softball and baseball complexes, open spaces, walking/running/hiking/biking trails, and the aforementioned incredible golf course. I loved walking around the baseball field and complex and checking out how they protect fans during the hot season, which I believe is like 10 months out of 12 in TX. And walking up to and around the front gate entrance of the Memorial Park Golf Course, which recently hosted the Texas Children’s Houston Open. Overall, it was another awesome Houston baseball experience walking around the grounds of Memorial Park Sports Complex, Houston.
