Last week, I was back in the Sacramento area for work (ABF Freight). With some personal time during the day, I scouted out a few baseball fields within driving distance of my hotel in nearby Elk Grove. One that caught my eye was University of California at Davis (Davis, CA) and their Dobbins Baseball Stadium. So, I took the 30 minute drive north and west over to Davis on Tuesday to check out the campus and the baseball field.

Easy to get to – 99 to 50 to 80 – and I was on campus and parking in the adjacent visitor’s lot before I knew it. Traffic can be such a nightmare on California highways but I got really lucky on Tuesday and cruised right into Davis from Elk Grove. The UC-Davis campus was amazing and bustling with students on scooters, bikes, and briskly walking on foot. I was hoping the baseball field would be open for me to inspect it and take photos. It was.

It was a bright, sunny morning and there were a number of grounds crew working on the grass. Go figure, landscaping the field in late November. The perks of California weather and climate, I suppose. The field looked amazing. I made my way from behind home plate, over to left field for a few views, then back to right field for some additional photos and views. The UC-Davis Aggies baseball team plays in the Big West Conference, Division 1, and I am sure packs the house on game days/weekends. Nice baseball stadium, very clean, great views of the field all over the place.

Coming into the Dobbins (James M. and Ann) Baseball Stadium, there is a tribute bench that really caught my eye. The player who is memorialized is former UC-Davis Aggie and Captain, Scott Heinig. According to a news report on the Aggie Captain, Heinig passed away at just 22, the result of a traumatic head injury. I loved the display with the bench, the bats, the team photos, and the individual photo of Heinig. Wow, 22 – way too young to pass away. Nice tribute.

It was a really cool visit to the University of California at Davis and their Dobbins Baseball Stadium. The field look incredible, game ready for sure. Bleachers, grounds, dugouts looked clean and game ready. I really liked the Scott Heinig tribute bench. Weather was cooperating, I was kind of bummed the Aggies didn’t come out and scrimmage or something. It was a smooth ride up and a smoother ride back with little or no traffic. Overall, a very cool UC-Davis baseball experience.
