During a rare moment when I was watching something other than baseball, I found myself watching the Kansas City Chiefs vs the Baltimore Ravens. But I was really just interested in watching QB extraordinaire Patrick Mahomes. I couldn’t help think of why I would just watch Patrick Mahomes, and not the game itself. I’m not a Chiefs fan. I’m not really a huge NFL Football fan. I am default New England Patriots fan, having lived in Rhode Island most of my lifetime. I actually grew up a SF 49ers fan, largely because of my mother’s obsession with Joe Montana. The answer is simple – I watch Patrick Mahomes because I am a fan of Patrick Mahomes the player. His athleticism, his arm strength, his intelligence on the field, his cool and calm demeanor in stressful situations. Mahomes, much like Michael Jordan, Simone Biles, Tiger Woods, Wayne Gretzky, makes you want to tune in and see what he can accomplish. You don’t want to miss a moment and that got me thinking about baseball players I feel the same way about. In the end, it always comes back to baseball for me.

Team wise, I will always be loyal to the Boston Red Sox. I am mostly referring to the players that I would go out of my way to drive to a game and to see play in person. Or make a mental note of an upcoming broadcast on TV. Or a Rhode Island player I covered in High School who is making his professional debut in the Minors or Major Leagues. This new baseball fan page will be dedicated to spotlighting their place in baseball history, past and present. And perhaps, it will introduce you to their baseball greatness. Here is an example:

I watch Bryce Harper swing and feel really, really bad for the 1st baseman playing defense. Heck, I feel bad for the pitcher, the right fielder, pretty much any player, coach, or ball attendant on the right side of the field. Harper’s swing is violent and powerful and attacking. He hits the ball harder and with more pop and more anger than just about anyone playing baseball right now. I would drive an hour out of my way to see him play. I would stop what I was doing at home to watch his at bats on TV. Bryce Harper is a generational talent and I’m so psyched to have witnessed his at bats recently at a Phillies vs Blue Jays game.

Whether its Aaron Judge playing outfield robbing home runs or Mookie Betts turning a double play or Chris Sale striking out batters, I just love individual performances in baseball. From Thomas Pannone to Michael King to Nick Raposo, I just love promoting Rhode Island based players. From Jackson Holliday to Marcelo Mayer to Kyle Teel, I follow the players working their way through the minor leagues on their way to “The Show.” This new page will be filled with player profiles, social media links, baseball reference links, stats I love, and so much more. So, stay tuned for quick hits like that on my favorite players – pro, amateur, high school and college level, and more. If you have a comment or suggestion on a player you would like me to profile, send me a note. I’d love to hear from you.
