The Quonset Point Naval Air Station Baseball Experience – Flyers Flying High Over The Competition

I have had so much fun compiling news articles about the Quonset Point Naval Air Station’s connection to baseball in the years prior to its decommissioning in 1974. Through the Providence College Archives and Special Collections group, I have found and read about 50 Quonset Scout newspapers. The Scout was the newspaper published to report on all things Quonset Point and it lives and breathes online, you can check it out here – Quonset Scout Newspaper. And without further ado, here are some more articles and images that caught my eye. Enjoy…

Meet the Flyers, 1953
Game action, 1955
Mahan story (lived in Wickford), 1946
LeBlanc bunting for the Flyers, 1952
North Atlantic Playoff Game action, 1957

Signs of the times – Newport Folk Festival and Jazz Festival news in their early years. $3 to see Louie Armstrong, Count Basie, and Ella Fitzgerald??? Yes, please.

Baseball and Football news, 1957
Flyers game action, 1945

And one last one, a commentary piece written about the state of baseball on Quonset Point and other neighboring naval stations. In short, it discusses the decline in teams, leagues, and the shift to playing softball on the bases. This commentary piece was published in the Quonset Scout, 1963:

I hope you have enjoyed reading these articles and seeing these images as much as I have. If you know someone in a photo or in an article I have presented in these blogs, reach out to me with their story. I would love to chat with you about your family’s Quonset Naval Air Station Baseball Experience!
